Museum Displays

Happy 20th Birthday to the Dromana and District Historical Society!

To mark this anniversary there is a special photographic display in the museum showing highlights of the past 20 years.

Howard Ratcliff Lawson: Builder and Entrepreneur

The current display in the Museum marks the 60th Anniversary of Lawson's death at Dromana in 1946. Lawson had the foresight to see the tourist potential in Arthurs Seat and built an extravagant complex of buildings on the summit including swimming pool, ballroom and viewing area with a camera obscura. Nearby he built several houses but his untimely death put an end to the project. Lawson also was a prolific builder of flats in the South Yarra and Dandenong Road areas.

We are at present researching further Lawson material and would be grateful for any other information about his work in Melbourne.

The Burrell Family

The museum has a cabinet with a display of artifacts donated by descendants of the Burrell family. The Burrell family occupied the Arthurs Seat homestead for a period of approximately 75 years from 1851 to 1924, and were prominent in the affairs of the district.
A book titled 'The Burrells of the Arthurs Seat Homestead' is on sale in the museum.

Shipping

For those interested in shipping, there is a model of the Cutty Sark, a model of the engine and paddle wheels of the Hygeia and some parts from the Edina which was launched in Glasgow in 1856 and ended its days in Port Phillip Bay in the 1930's.
