Vincent's story

Vincent was part of the group of six donkeys from Buxton who were rescued by Donkey Shelter, after their owner was reported to the RSPCA for neglecting
them (see "Christine's story" in the Donkey Picture Gallery).

As you can see from the photos, he was not in good condition. In fact, he was the worst of the six; he was riddled with lice, putridly dirty and his feet were so long and overgrown that they were unrecognisable. At some stage someone had chopped the ends off his feet, because his hooves were square at the end, rather like the chisel-toed shoes that are in fashion now. The walls of the hooves had grown across the soles of his feet, and when the farrier saw them he said: "I know there's a foot in there somewhere, but I don't know where to start."

Because he had been kept in the same paddock as both jacks and jennies, he had been attacked by the jacks, and his ear had been ripped open, leaving it scarred and scabbed.

But the most heart-breaking thing of all was that he was profoundly depressed. His spirit was gone and he had given up. As soon as he arrived he was put into the Intensive Care area, but he just used to stand and face the back wall. Every time someone would turn him around he would turn back to face the wall again.

His depression was so bad that May thought that she wouldn't be able to restore his hope, and was worried that she might lose him.

However, after much love and care from everyone at the Shelter, he is now a happy, handsome and magnificent donkey.
