With great sorrow we announce the death on 1st July 2004 of our
darling boy Shamus. |

|
Shamus was rushed to the Werribee Veterinary Hospital on 30th June 2004
suffering from colic. He had surgery to remove the obstruction, but
his heart was unable to withstand the strain and he did not wake up from
the anaesthetic. Shamus was an elderly donkey, and because his back teeth were loose he couldn't chew his food properly. This was most probably the cause of his colic, and the added burden of the surgery was just too much for his heart. The Werribee Equine Hospital is the the premier equine hospital in Australia and Shamus received the best possible care. He will have a 'Peace' rose planted in his memory in the Memorial Garden, and a plaque will be placed there as a tribute to him. |

Shamus's storyShamus was a beautiful little donkey aged in his late twenties when he came to Donkey Shelter. He was first prize in a raffle at the Royal Melbourne Show when he was six months old.The people who won him took him to live on their property, where he lived very happily for many years with his horse friend, Gus. Unfortunately Gus became very sick and had to be euthanased. Then his owners moved to a suburban houseblock and agisted Shamus in Mount Martha. They felt that this was not the best for him so they decided to surrender Shamus to Donkey Shelter. Shamus settled in very well at Donkey Shelter and spent many happy years here. He was very happy with both his donkey and volunteer friends. With his lovely, gentle disposition he won many caring friends at the Shelter, and we will all miss him terribly. |
