Sally Also

Sadly, on the 29th April 2004, our beloved Sally Also died.

About three weeks previously, she had a stroke from which she never recovered. It left her with visual problems in her right eye, and she was constantly turning to the left. Over the past week she isolated herself from the herd, and in particular from her best friend Cleo, from whom she was inseparable. I think she knew she was dying.

Then, this week she appeared to have forgotten how to eat. Before any further deterioration and suffering, and after discussing her with the vet who had reviewed her last week, we decided with much sadness to euthanase her.

Sally Also was a darling girl and we will miss her very much.

Sally Also's story

Sally Also was a jenny who came to live at Donkey Shelter when she was about forty-five years old.

For many years she had lived with a couple in Research. As time passed both Sally Also and the couple grew old. The lady died and the elderly man became nearly blind. It was a very sad day for him when he gave Sally Also to the Shelter, as he had to go to a nursing home.

Sally Also had lived by herself for many years, so she was not used to being with lots of other donkeys. She was nervous and frightened at first. Then she met Cleo. They became close friends, and were never far from each other. Sally Also became very confident and would protect Cleo from everything whether she needed to be protected or not!

You may be wondering why she was called Sally Also? It's because we already had a Sally at the Shelter when Sally Also arrived, and so she was originally called "Sally 2". But the volunteers thought that numbering the donkeys is callous, so she became "Sally Also".

We loved Sally Also dearly.
