Katie's storyKatie is a lovely donkey in her late teens. In April 2001 she came to the Shelter from Toora, where she had lived for many years. The lady who owned her was elderly, and when she became unwell she found that she was unable to look after Katie, so she surrendered her to Donkey Shelter. On her arrival we noticed that Katie was rather thin and had difficulty chewing hay and grass. The Shelter dentist diagnosed a tooth problem and Katie now has to be bowl-fed on chaff. She has thrived on this diet and has put on weight. In the photo at left you can see that her face looks a bit swollen, particularly on her right side. This is because she pushes her food between her teeth and the inside of her cheeks so that her teeth don't cut into the inside of her cheeks when she eats. Katie is very happy at the Shelter and her beautiful, gentle nature makes her a great favourite with everyone. |
