In Memoriam

With great sadness we announce the death on Thursday the 12th of May 2005 of our beloved Cleo, also known as Cleo The Divine or Princess Cleo because of her beautiful nature.

Cleo dislocated her right hip joint after sliding into a small, muddy dam at the bottom of Intensive Care. There is no effective treatment for this because although the hip can be put back into its socket, the minute the donkey stands up it pops out again. So the decision was made to euthanase her.

Lucy, Trish, Kath, Lee and myself said our goodbyes to her and stayed with her to the end. There was no suffering at all. She peacefully drifted into a sleep.

Despite the tears, we found it helpful on the journey home to think of her as young and fit, running through the paddocks of Paradise with her good friend Sally Also.

Cleo will be remembered with a standard rose and plaque in the Memorial Garden and her memory will stay with us forever.

Cleo's story

Cleo was a 23 year old jenny when she came to Donkey Shelter. She had suffered the horrendous act of having her overgrown, neglected hoof-growth cut off with an axe by her cruel owner. This and the long period of neglect effectively left her with deformed and crippled feet.

Despite what she had suffered, Cleo retained her loving and patient nature. She was an absolute delight.
