Adam

In Memoriam

With great sorrow we announce the death on the 19th November 2008 of our darling beloved Adam.
Ever since he arrived at Donkey Shelter Adam had been prone to getting colic, which had resulted in a number of visits to the Werribee Equine Hospital for treatment.

His last episode also required a visit to the hospital, and when all other methods failed to help him, he underwent surgery to clear any blockages.

During the operation the vets examined his bowel and discovered that it did not look normal, although they couldn't find any tumours.

Despite clearing the blockages, after the operation Adam was still suffering pain, and so, with the appearance of his bowel in mind, the vets felt there was no option but to euthanase him.

When he came to live at Donkey Shelter he quickly formed a very deep bond with May, and would get very distressed when he was separated from her. Whenever she left Shelter he would run up the paddock trying to keep up with her car. He was famous for his loud braying, which he would do whenever he was put in a paddock too far away from her house.

He was a particularly smart and clever donkey and soon learned how to open and close gates, even spring-loaded ones. On one occasion he even closed the gate behind May so she was shut in the stable!

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, which are volunteer working days at Shelter, he and his good friend Jimmy would be let out of their paddock to wander around wherever they liked on the property. They loved to do this and it was wonderful to see them enjoying themselves so much.

Adam was a darling, wonderful donkey who we loved so very much, and we will miss him terribly.

Adam wasn't in good condition when he came to us in August 2000. After much TLC at Donkey Shelter he became healthy and happy.

Adam is a gelding who is about 33 years old. He lived for many years in a paddock with his brother Rocky. After the breakdown of his owners' marriage, and the death of his brother Rocky, Adam became very lonely and distressed. Fortunately the existence of the Shelter became known to his human mum and she asked if the Shelter would take him in. Since his arrival he has made his presence felt - he can be a very noisy donkey!

He loves everyone at the Shelter, both donkeys and people. He especially loves May and brays loudly if he is put in a paddock too far away from her house.

Adam is very happy at the Shelter and is the most lovable donkey, with his unceasing friendliness and his beautiful loud voice!
