REGISTERING YOUR DONKEY
Members of the Donkey Society of Victoria and other Australian State Societies that are associated with the Affiliated Donkey Societies of Australia are able to Register their donkeys through the National Register managed by the Affiliation. The Register was established over 25 years ago and now caters for Jacks, Jennies, Geldings and Hybrids.
Why you should Register your donkey
BREEDING
Everyone who intends to breed a foal, be it for their own use or to sell, should think very seriously about the consequences. It is imperative to know as much as possible about the animals you are breeding from, and the best way is by using registered donkeys. You can trace the bloodlines and hopefully develop the characteristics you want to attain. It also helps responsible breeders eliminate any undesirable traits.
IDENTIFICATION
If donkeys are branded or microchipped this helps identify any donkeys that are for sale and is invaluable should animals stray or be stolen.
STATUS
We are all proud of our donkeys for different reasons and they are all good at something. They may be attractive with good conformation; they may be excellent performance animals; they may be especially gentle with children; perhaps we love them as a companion animal. In all these cases we can demonstrate our pride by having our donkeys registered.
Registration raises the status of donkeys in the eyes of the public. We all know that a donkey is worthwhile regardless of a piece of paper, however as with other animals, we may be helping to ensure that they are valued and better treated.
