Welcome to the
Donkey Society of Victoria Inc.

ABN 82 148 300 307

The Donkey Society of Victoria (DSV) was formed in 1972 by a small group of donkey enthusiasts and was known as The Australian Donkey Breed Society, later changing its name and for some time now has been known as The Donkey Society of Victoria. The DSV is a member of The Affiliated Donkey Societies of Australia. On a national scale records are maintained of the parentage of each donkey registered so a pedigree of five or six generations is on record for many of the donkeys being born now.

The aims of the Society are primarily the well being of all donkeys in Australia, be they wild or domesticated, by:

  1. Encouraging the breeding of good donkeys. To do this the Society shall open a Stud Book and maintain same for registration of stock.
  2. Providing education on the care of donkeys.
  3. Promoting research into all matters relating to donkeys, their health and general care.
  4. Encouraging and supporting the exhibition of donkeys.
  5. Preventing cruelty to donkeys and co-operating with any other Society actively engaged in preventing cruelty.
  6. Promoting the public image of the donkey as a useful animal as well as an enchanting pet.
Field days are held to help new owners learn about their donkeys, plus more advanced training days and other sessions of interest. Members are able to socialise with other members at the functions held during the year.

"Brayings", the Society Newsletter is sent out every two months to keep members in touch with the Victorian "donkey world". Our members receive "Donkey Digest" which is the National Magazine of the Affiliated Donkey Societies of Australia. It is circulated 4 times per year and provides information of interest.

Members of the Society range from people who enjoy involvement in many of the activities to others who are mostly interested in the newsletters and information - in fact, some don't even own a donkey! So the only criteria for membership is to be a "donkey lover"!
