The Distressed Infants
Support Association of Victoria (DISA of Vic) Inc, evolved from
a need of families who had infants that were distressed for prolonged
periods of time. There is considerable stress on the family
when this happens, and it was felt that some support for parents
and the child was needed. It is normal for babies to cry
for short periods of time, however crying which persists despite
the parents trying everything they know to console the baby can
cause an almost unbearable strain. This intense strain is
seldom recognised by those who have never encountered it.
With this in mind DISA of Vic was launched in November 1994 as
a voluntary non-profit association.
The members of DISA came together to support each other and aimed
to pass this support on to others in need. DISA also set out to
inform the health professionals of the need for such a group.
We are of the belief that people who have been through the experience
of a distressed infant have a greater understanding of how others
may be feeling, and consequently more able to give support.
DISA is a non-medical association.
We are fortunate to have the benefit of professional support of
health professionals from the following areas: Maternal
and Child Health sisters, General Practitioners, Pediatrician,
Pediatric Dietician and Pediatric Gastroenterologist.
Volunteer parents offer a variety of support in the form of telephone
contacts, newsletters and general update of medical
information. Please contact us if you would like to become
a team member of DISA able to contribute in any of the above ways.
Please note that the management of distressed babies, particularly
those with reflux, can be confusing. Many of our suggestions
are contradictory, and some could make their symptoms worse.
What works for one baby may not necessarily work for another.
If you have tried something and it isn't working, don't persist,
try something else.
DISA cannot help you with diagnosing a medical condition.
Please see your General Practitioner to exclude any physical causes
for your baby's distress.
