At the moment grey water from the bathroom and toilets flows directly to the river. If we dug a ditch at the end of tiled raised area in picture 3 above, we could divert the water. Bananas like the chemicals in soap. So if we planted bananas by the ditch they could help clean the water, along with the various insects in the soil. So any water reaching the river would be clean and we would have bananas to eat. |
I diverted the water first off, while waiting for the trees, but this picture was taken after the trees were planted.
I've also planted some lemon grass on the lower side of the rocks, which will help stablise the rocks.
I'm told a lot of water flows down there in the rainy season, but I haven't seen that yet and we're half way through the rainy season.
Three of the ten trees I planted died. That might have been due to the long wait between delivery and planting, due to lack of tools and waiting on help, which I later gave up on and some local children partly demolished some trees. The person who donated the trees said she'd bring three replacements. The free roaming chickens love the mulch and dig it up looking for food. That doesn't bother me at all.
The path slab is about 5cm [2 inches] thick and the erosion was twice that.
First I built up the wall with another layer of stones. Then I mulched.
I'm watering this mulched stretch every now and then and those free roaming chickens love the mulch and dig it up looking for food.
I've planted some lemon grass here too. The dirt that had washed down onto the driveway due to lack of mulching, was a few inches thick and was slippery [a safety risk] when wet. After mulching I removed the accumulated dirt.
PS The dog in the picture has adopted me probably 'cause I show it some affection [pat it] and it follows me around. My bathroom is at the other end of this mulched stretch and my room [during the rainy season] is opposite the bathroom to the left. That is in the top left hand corner of this picture.
