Mr. Stanley Hammond, sculptor of the memorial, and Miss K. Kirkwood who sketched the design were both present, and introduced to those present.
Mr. Stanley Hammond, was only 23 years old when he entered a competition for the erection of a memorial at Deep Lead, it was his first major works. Since that time Mr. Hammond has returned to Deep Lead many times to maintain the Memorial. Mr. Hammond had his 80th. Birthday in August l993.
At the conclusion of the official ceremony the visitors were invited to the school to partake of afternoon tea. There were many present who received their education there and they met old schoolmates after many years and spent a most enjoyable time.
After the Gold rush days it seems that the next major event in Deep Lead history was the preparation for and opening of the Pioneer Memorial on 8th. May 1937. The Committee with Miss Myrtle Davidson as secretary wrote to all the 'old timers'. Miss Davidson must have been very busy corresponding with all the past residents who in their replies either accepted the invitation to the unveiling of the memorial or with great regret indicated they were not able to attend the "Great Event. Donations towards this worthy cause were generously given.
Present at one meeting to discuss the memorial were Cr. D. Williams (presiding), Mr and Mrs C. Davidson, Mrs H. Freeland, Mrs J. Perry, Miss J. Perry, Cr E. P. Timmins, Messrs M. Nealy, T. Molan, J. Prydderch, S. P. Freeland, D. W. and Arthur Cawthorne, J Hall, J Perry, J. Davidson, G. W. C. Venables and Miss M. Davidson (Secretary).
