Architectural Philosophy

Design Theory. 702-305

The work compiled here, was done as part of the Bachelor of Planning and Design degree, at The University of Melbourne. The work was completed between 1993 - 1994.

To follow are the assignments to be completed for this subject.

  1. Journal, students are to prepare a journal identifying their thoughts on lectures. My journal was hand written, prepared within tutorials and after each particular lecture. Equivalent to 30% of total marks.

  2. Essay 1, A 1500 word essay 25% Archetypes. Outline the arguement for archetypal meaning in architecture. What are its strengths and weaknesses?

  3. Essay2, A 1500 word essay 25%. Defining a critical position. Based on their writings, and work written about them, define the critical position of any one of the following theorists: Peter Eisenman.

  4. Literature review, 10%. Australian Aboriginals, and the definition of place. Amos Rapoport. A class presentation, to a maximum of five minutes.

With the completion of this subject, the lecturers hope that students will engage with the architecture that surrounds them at several levels, other than just aesthetics or construction.
