Newspapers
We have an almost complete collection of the Dandenong Journal dating from 1887. Our members have indexed it from 1887 - 1931. The original collection was donated by Greg Dickson, then owner of the Dandenong Journal. Microfiche from 1877 - 1955 is available at our centre, and also the Dandenong Library.
We also have extensive copies of the Dandenong Advertiser from 1880 to its end in 1950, and fragments of The News, and the
Berwick Times.
Today, we collect all 4 local newspapers.
Photographs
The basis of our photography collection is that of the local professional photographers until about the mid 1960s. After a takeover, they were saved from being sent to the tip by photographer Marjorie Criddle.
The collection has been extensively added to over the years, by donation (accidental collection) or taking current photographs (deliberate collection) and is now about 16,000.
The collection more that doubled in 2001 because of the deliberate collection made of photographs from over 100 community groups during the ‘Snapshot of Dandenong in 2001’ project.
Framed photographs hang in a special hanging space.
Books, magazines, theses, documents, records, ephemera
