Beyond the Pale of Settlement is a very useful site for providing historical background to anyone with Jewish ancestors covering this period in Imperial Russia. The section dealing with Alexander II has particular bearing on my ancestors' circumstances and the impetus for their immigration.

Three of Josef's children were born in Moscow, and there is a family story that a family member, a Rabbi, was superintendent of a military hospital in Moscow and for services rendered was presented with a sword and medal by Czar Alexander II. After the assassination of this Czar Jews were persecuted and made to leave Moscow.

These events coincide exactly with the movements of my family at this time and with their emigration to Australia via Hamburg aboard the Erlangen (below).
