Danish Australian Cultural Society

The first thing Danes usually try to teach visitors to say in the native tongue is the name of a dessert: rødgrød med fløde. Also, every year in the beginning of summer the news programmes report on the arrival and price of the first new potatoes from the island of Samsø; and dishes such as sm&oslashrrebrød (open-sandwiches), aebleskiver & gløgg (Danish doughnuts and gluhwein) and frikadeller (meat-balls) have become national treasures used as a trademark by the tourist industry. These examples are just a few of many that show what an important part food takes in Danish culture.

DACS published the cookbook Tak for Mad in English with Danish recipes in December 2005. It contains traditional and modern style cooking and is a selection of our member's favourite dishes. It is a great way of getting a little taste of the Danish kitchen if you like to cook yourself! Please contact a committee member if you would like to purchase the book. Cost: $15.
