Anglesea - Sydney March 2003 |
|
Anglesea, Victoria, was chosen as the place to start this trip as we had previously ridden the Great Ocean Road from Warrnambool to Anglesea. On Saturday, 1st March we set off, three weeks later after pedalling approximately 1,300 kilometres, very hilly kilometres, we arrived in Sydney. We aimed to keep off the Princes Highway as much as possible so rather than ride through Melbourne around Port Phillip Bay we crossed from Queenscliff to Sorrento on the ferry. Another lively ferry ride took us across Westernport Bay from Stony Point to Cowes on Philip Island. Lens bike was roped down but he had to grab mine at one point to stop it from going overboard! |

| From Cowes we travelled through South Gippsland, Wonthaggi, Inverloch, Foster, Toora to Sale, joining the Princes Highway at Bairnsdale. This part of the country was still a bit dry though they had obviously had some recent rain. We rode through beautiful forests as well as farmland. The very hilly parts were good preparation for the ride from Lakes Entrance on. The longest day in this section was 115 kilometres from the wind farm at Toora to Sale, almost six hours on the bike seat. The gentle tail wind was very helpful. There had been some showers on a couple of days but we'd managed to avoid them. | ||
