The Chameleon Society of Victoria, Inc.
The Chameleon Society of Victoria Inc.is an organization, for those persons who, because of gender identity problems, experience loneliness and isolation. Its aims are to eliminate or minimize the isolation which often is the lot of the transperson. We also aim to better inform others with a view to greater understanding and tolerance of our small community. People mistrust that which they do not understand, and crossing the gender lines can evoke resentment and ridicule in the heart of some. Most cross dressers are heterosexual and many are happily married and have children.
To come out in the open takes courage, for while many are accepting some reject out of hand. To tell or not to tell, and if to tell, who to tell, depends upon individual circumstances and the likely impact on others, particularly children and parents. The "do not darken this door again" reaction is not uncommon from family members. Cross-dressing can be a very real problem in relationships, particularly where it has been hidden from partners, and by chance is discovered. It is common for cross dressers to resist or deny their inner urges for the sake of partners, family, and the expectations of others, but in the long run this is typically unsuccessful no matter how sincere the effort and good intention. The common wisdom, these days, is that it's best to be up front with partners, and many are supportive given discreet, thoughtful, behavior in private.
The Chameleon Society of Victoria was formed by Robyn Richards (pictured above) in April 1996 as a successor to the Elaine Barrie Project which ran for 18 years until ill health forced its founder Elaine Barrie to retire. The Chameleon Society of Victoria was incorporated in October 1998.
Chameleon is not exclusive to the transgendered (cross dressers, transvestites and transsexuals) but welcome all who have a genuine interest in the matter. Wives, partners, friends, family, and medical, legal, psychological and counseling practitioners are very welcome. Social meetings are held once a month, and a monthly magazine is produced for members, which is circulated to like organizations interstate and overseas.
