“Child abuse is a huge problem and the time to act is now”
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has just released data that has found a staggering 266,745 reports of child abuse in 2005-06 in Australia - up 93% since 2001-02. The AIHW also found that of these reports of Child abuse 55,921 cases were substantiated.
These figures demonstrate the degree to which child abuse is a problem in this country. Child abuse is not something we can sweep under the carpet, the impact that it has on the child victims are life long and appropriate action must be taken.
It is time that state and federal governments started to make the prevention of child abuse more of a policy priority.
“Children are the future of this country; we need adequate systems in place to protect them from those who predate upon them – its time we made the needs of children a priority” (Dr. Reina Michaelson)

Dr Michaelson, can you be more specific about what policy changes you think need to be made? Do we need to be more punitive with offenders? I s it more and more money for more and more support services? Or is it something about a much broader cultural change that's needed so that such a horrific level of offending doesn't happen in the first place?
