Little Athletics: Where it began and what it has to Offer

Little Athletics = Family + Fun + Fitness

The Little Athletics movement started from humble beginnings in Victoria, in 1964. Mr Trevor Billingham recognised a need for a simple Saturday morning competition, to cater for all those youngsters too young to compete in senior athletics.

The concept soon took hold, so that in the 2000/2001 season, over 40,000 Little Athletes were registered at over 200 Centres throughout NSW alone. These Centres are distributed throughout 24 Zones in 5 Regions. When officials are taken into account for each of the Centres to function each week, there are close to 80,000 men, women and children actively participating in the sport during the summer months.

Little Athletics is more than a sport; it is a Family Movement in which Mum, Dad and the children can do something together. Parents are involved as voluntary helpers and officials. They share many enjoyable experiences with the children.

The community has become very aware of the value of physical fitness and exercise in today's fast paced society. A fit body means an alert mind and a decrease in the incidence of many physical ailments.

Code of Behaviour

The Association upholds a code of behaviour developed for use in sporting programs for children by the Australian Sports Commission. It applies to Parents, Coaches and the Athletes.

Once you are registered with Little Athletics you can also attend coaching clinics and live-in camps, where you can have lots of fun, meet many new friends and learn about track and field from some of the best coaches in NSW!

Sunsmart Policy

The Little Athletics Association of New South Wales recommends that all Little Athletics Centres across the state adopt protective practices in relation to exposure of members to UV light.

All Centres are requested to actively seek to promote, encourage and support sun protection at both training and competition.

Where possible, Centres shall:

• Provide SPF 15+ broad spectrum water resistant sunscreen for members and make it available for sale and/or use to spectators

• Encourage parents and athletes to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas every 2 hours

• Encourage members to wear suitable protective clothing, when not participating in a trial or an event. Eg: shirt with collar and sleeves, hat

• Make maximum use of existing shade at facilities

• When shade is not adequate, seek to work with relevant authorities and other community groups to provide more shade at facilities and if possible, provide temporary shade until adequate shade is available

• Promote sun safety through newsletters and over the public address system

Representative Athletes

Every child has the opportunity of representing our club whether it be at an inter club carnival, Zone, Regional or State level.  You don't have to excel, just have a love of athletics.

To reach the State Championships you need to qualify through a series of championships.  The first three (3) placegetters at the Zone Championships qualify to attend the Regional Championships.  From here the first three (3) placegetters from four Regions and four (4) placegetters from the fifth, on a rotational basis, will proceed to the State Championships.

Zone -  Athletes may enter in up to four events for U7 - U12, and up to 6 events for U13 - U17.  Under 7's competitors can only compete at Zone level, all older age groups may proceed to Regional if they qualify.  At Zone level the first three (3) placegetters receive medals, and the first eight (8) finalists in all events receive Zone Certificates.

Regional - At Regional level the first three (3) placegetters receive Regional medals, and the first eight (8) finalists receive Regional Certificates and all receive Regional track suit patches.  Under 8's competitors progress no further than Regional.

If an athlete receives an achievement award, he/she is not eligible for the improvement award.  This is to ensure that the awards are evenly distributed.

Officials Guidelines

Officials

Chief officials are in charge of various event venues.  Their task is to organise and ensure the smooth running of those events.

Guidelines for Parent Helpers

Age managers - Keep group together and supervise at all times.  Take care when moving from one event to another e.g.: crossing running tracks, shot put/discus areas etc.  Assist officials if, whenever, wherever needed.  Fill out results tickets for each event and hand out to athletes.

In all field events - Each athlete will have three trials only, the best time will determine athletes performance and placing.

Long jump and triple jump - To measure, place the zero end of tape at edge of sand break. Distance read to take-off point, i.e. take-off board for ages U13 and to toe impression on metre square for ages U6 - U 12.  U6 - U12 (with no foot mark): If the athlete takes off from behind the nominated take-off area, measurement is taken from the back of the nominated take-off area, to the closest landing mark in the pit.  The measurement must be taken perpendicular to the take-off line or its extension.   It is a "foul" if their toe protrudes past the take-off board. They will also be fouled if on completing their jump, they walk back through the landing area. Do not measure foul jumps; place an "F" on the sheet. Fouls are included in the three trials.

Shot put - Place zero end of tape measure where shot first breaks soil.  Distance is read on inside edge of throwing circle, in line with circles centre.  Distance to nearest 1 cm.  Competitor must always enter and leave from rear of the circle.  Wait until all children are behind throwing area before allowing next competitor to throw.  It is considered a foul if they step over the front of the circle, if the shot lands outside the lines marked, if hand moves in any other direction except forward during the "push" action, or shot not held in the correct position on the neck.  Do not measure fouls, place "F" on the sheet and explain to athlete why they received it.  Fouls are included in the three trials.

Discus - Zero end of tape measure is placed where discus first breaks soil.  Distance is read in inside edge of throwing circle, in line with circles centre.  Distance to nearest 2 cm.  Competitor must enter and leave from the rear circle.  All other children must be behind and to one side of the circle before competitor is allowed to have a throw.  It is considered a foul if they step over the front of the circle or if the discus lands outside of the marked lines.

High Jump - Measuring stick is placed in the centre of cross bar, measure to top of bar.  Each competitor is allowed three trials at the set height.  If they succeed they rest until height is reset.  If they fail three times at a set height, they are out of the competition.  It is considered a foul if the bar is knocked off.  Competitors are allowed to pass at any height prior to their third attempt at that height and attempt the next height.

Timekeepers - Chief timekeeper announces "gun up" - reset watch - Start timing on smoke not sound.  Give placing card to competitor and time for that child to Chief timekeeper.

Event Recorder -Record times/distances of competitors in each running/field event. Write tickets for competitors which will be collected by the age managers.

Starter - Call athletes to line then "on your mark", allow time for them to get comfortable in starting positions.  The next command is "set", they stay in this position until the starter is satisfied that they are still.  The starter may then fire the pistol, a second shot is fired if there is a false start.
