A Conference Exploring Current Practice And Research Around Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Young People

Introduction

During 1998 'Context' hosted a conference exploring issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and same sex attracted young people (LGBT) young people; 'Young People and Sexualities: Experiences, Perspectives and Service Provision; A Community Conference'. 'Context' is now organizing another conference day 'New Work, New Work', focusing on current practice and research around LGBT young people.

Aims

  1. To explore current practice and research around LGBT young people in Victoria
  2. To encourage action, discussion and networking with a view to contributing to the work of improving service provision for LGBT young people in Victoria
  3. To facilitate a day of discussion where people offer papers and workshops
  4. To explore and examine issues relevant to the experiences of LGBT young people within the community (family, home, school, university, TAFE, youth centers, sports clubs, work places, at leisure, etc.)
  5. To investigate and critique policy and programs affecting LGBT young people
  6. To provide a forum to consider and discuss current practice and thought as it relates to LGBT young people
  7. To encourage access, participation, rights and equality for young people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity
  8. To challenge discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in policy and programs concerning young people

Intended Outcomes

  1. That people present papers and workshops relevant to the aims of 'New Work, New Work'
  2. That a book of presenters papers be produced within 6 months of 'New Work, New Work' and that the material be distributed
  3. That a contact list (including email addresses) of participants be produced and circulated to people who attended 'New Work, New Work' for ongoing networking and action
  4. That participants formulate achievable strategies to implement within their workplace or educational setting with a view to their places being more tolerant, accepting and inclusive of difference based on sexual orientation and gender identity
  5. That participants of 'New Work, New Work' learn, network and have fun
  6. That participants of 'New Work, New Work' contribute to evaluating the conference and assist in determining the focus of further Context events
  7. That 'New Work, New Work' is run efficiently and effectively
  8. That 'New Work, New Work' contributes towards challenging discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in policy and programs concerning young people and that it encourages access, participation, rights and equality for young people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity
