INTRODUCTION

Context is a group for teachers, youth workers and others who share an interest in issues affecting gay, lesbian, bisexual,transgender and same sex attracted (GLBT) young people.

Context is a non-profit community group and is not incorporated. There is no joining fee to be involved in Context.

Context began meeting in 1996.

AIM

To contribute to the work of improving the experiences of GLBT young people, teachers and youth workers in youth sector settings.

ACTIVITIES

  1. Hold monthly meetings to discuss issues and to develop and implement activities
  2. Establish steering committess to manage particular activities
  3. Network with GLBT organisations and other groups
  4. Participate in community events
  5. Expand the membership base
  6. Generate funding
  7. Develop and implement a communication strategy

OPERATION

Context operates in a Community Development framework. The aims and activities of Context are determined by the members of the group. Context has an open and non-hierarchical organisational style.

The activities of Context contribute to the work of improving the experiences of GLBT young people, teachers and youth workers in youth sector settings. Context positions itself within a broader project of awareness raising and social change.

Context establishes steering committees to manage particular projects.

MEETINGS

Context holds monthly meetings. The meetings have a focussed and formal section followed by an informal discussion.

The focussed and formal section of the meeting is an opportunity to report on activities and other general business, discuss correspondance and to review and plan action.

Ideas for informal discussion are welcome and may include:

  • ideas for activities
  • report on research
  • topic exploration
  • info sharing
  • guest speakers
  • fundraising
  • discussion on what's happening in workplaces and what this could mean for
  • Context activities
