An Overview:

Coburg High School

Coburg High School began as Coburg Higher Elementary School, the first of its type in Victoria, which opened in 1911 and was situated in the Coburg Primary School. When the original Coburg High School building was completed in 1916 the pupils simply transferred across Bell Street to the new building which was 'L' shaped, extending across the front on Bell Street and down the east side forming an open area facing out to the south-west.

By 1926 the school had expanded sufficiently for plans to be made to enlarge the building forming a fully enclosed quadrangle. The modern frontage, as most of the current ex-students know the school, was added in the 1930's and the three storey building at the rear in the 1960's.

Farewell Coburg High

The school continued in Bell Street until 1993 when it was merged with Preston Technical School and East Coburg Primary School to form the City of Moreland College. The new College was located on the site of the former RMIT and Coburg Teachers College campus, where it operated until 2004. The buildings which so many of us associated with Coburg High School were abandoned and, after a sad period of dereliction, were demolished.

Coburg Senior High School

In 2007, a new School, known as Coburg Senior High School, opened in refurbished buildings on the Moreland College site. It caters for Years 10 to 12 only, and offers an innovative curriculum with up-to-date methods of delivery. In many ways, this new School is the inheritor of the Coburg High School tradition.

An Historical Imperative

Coburg High School played a very important part in the history of Coburg and surrounding areas and it is imperative that the history of the school be preserved.

If your sound card is activated and the volume turned up, you should be hearing the School Song, The Best School of All. The song was used by many schools throughout the English-speaking world. The tune used here was composed by L.A. Adamson and the words were by Sir Henry Newbolt.

It's good to see the school we knew,
the land of youth and dream.
To greet again the rule we knew,
before we took the stream.
Though long we've missed the sight of her,
Out hearts may not forget:
We've lost the old delight of her,
We keep her honour yet.

We'll honour yet the school we knew
The best school of all
We'll honour yet the rule we knew
Till the last bell call
For working days or holidays
And glad or melancholy days
They were great days and jolly days
At the best school of all
