our history

Community Media Services was established in 2005 by Melbourne media activists who set up TVU in 1986, RMITV in 1987, St. Kilda Access TV (SKA) in 1988, and the MCTC (Melbourne TV Channel 31) in 1991.

Grassroots media often involves people working with unfamiliar technologies and processes. We have developed production workflows that make production easy and accessible, and bring people together to explore issues, voice concerns, and be creative.

Although media can be produced by a single individual, media production often requires a group of participants working with an assortment of technologies. We provide workflows and infrastructure that facilitate citizens to organize, conceptualize and produce their own media.
