our history

Community Media Services was established in 2005 by Melbourne media activists who set up TVU in 1986, RMITV in 1987, St. Kilda Access TV (SKA) in 1988, and the MCTC (Melbourne TV Channel 31) in 1991.

projects

We support an active role for communities in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news and information. We believe that citizen media complements the circulation of independent, reliable, accurate, wide-ranging and relevant information a modern democracy needs.

We manage a number of community based media projects aiming to increase community participation in media and self sufficiency in media technologies.

  • television subtitling
  • reinstatement of community facilities at Victoria Park
  • 31 degrees - a survey of community television in Australia
  • melbourne grid - a vlog about social networks
  • the television train
  • media measurement
  • corporate governance
  • lobbying

We believe that community based media has the capacity to ameliorate the traditional mass media neglect of public interest and partisan portrayal of news and world events. Our award winning projects facilitate an educated community, an able workforce, and a media literate and better connected society.
