our history

Community Media Services was established in 2005 by Melbourne media activists who set up TVU in 1986, RMITV in 1987, St. Kilda Access TV (SKA) in 1988, and the MCTC (Melbourne TV Channel 31) in 1991.

captioning services

We have developed an automated crossplatform captioning system called Metatitler.

Metatitler processes a plain text transcript containing timecode, dialog and metadata to generate captions recognised by the video editing programs Final Cut Pro™ and Adobe Premiere™. It arranges line and length for titlesafe display with the selected font and size, attempting to break lines at punctuation in order to maintain sense, and minimise any fine-tuning. Metatitler creates a sequence synced to the source video, providing that the transcript's time cues are accurate.

Metatitler deploys on any platform that has the python scripting language installed. That might be different from the target editor's platform, so for example you could generate titles on a Linux system for use on a Mac with Final Cut Pro, or on Windows with premiere. Metatitler is presently in private beta testing. If you would like to be involved contact us.
