SMOKEFREE VENUES IN VICTORIA

Smoking is prohibited in all commercial eating places in Victoria. Since September 1,2002 further restrictions have been placed on smoking in entertainment venues. Smoking is not allowed in gaming rooms including bingo halls. In venues with more than one room, at least one room must be nonsmoking.

About 10% of venues have only one room and smoking is allowed in such cases. Unfortunately, in many large venues, they already have a restaurant so the remaining rooms may still be smoke-filled. Also, in some cases, smoke will flow from the smoking area to the nonsmoking area. (The "rooms" don't need walls and doors).

For more information see the Government website.

There are a few entertainment venues in Victoria (apart from restaurants) which have chosen to be fully smokefree, regardless of government regulations.

Hopefully there are more. If you know of any, please let me know.

There are houseparties which are nonsmoking (though smokers can smoke outside). such as MatchMates in Caulfield and Gina's in Mitcham.

There are other events organized such as "Dinner for Eight" etc. which are advertised in the newspapers.

Events organized by Cafe Society and others are advertised at R.S.V.P., and are usually in smokefree venues or are at venues with smokefree sections, though you have to read the fine print.
