Composer Profile 6
Franz Schubert

The Great Tunesmith. Mt Roland, Sheffield TAS

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) With its jaunty tunes and air of melancholy, Schubert's music is irrisistable.

Schubert lived much of his musical life in the shadow of Beethoven; as did most composers did at the time! Unfortunately, just as he was free of Beethoven's physical presence, and hitting a rare streak of form, he died. After helping bury Beethoven he joined him within the year.

Schubert was renowned for writing hundreds and hundreds of small songs, lied, during his lifetime. However, much of the rest of his music was neglected for years, especially the powerful piano sonatas and chamber music of his last years.

Thankfully this has been rectified. The disarming simplicity of much of his music has helped Schubert win increasing numbers of friends. As with Mozart, there is more than nice tunes, and Schubert’s music asks some profound questions.

Here’s a range of music that showcases Schubert’s cheerful, yet dramatic music:

  1. Allegretto in c minor, D915
  2. Impromptus, D 899 – No.2 in E flat major. Allegro
  3. Moments musicaux, D780 – No. 3 in f minor. Allegro moderato
  4. String Quintet in C major, D956 – 2. Adagio
  5. Piano Sonata (no.20) in A major, D959 – 2. Andantino
  6. Piano Trio no. 2 in E flat major, D929 – 2. Andante con moto
  7. Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano in a minor, D821 – 1. Allegro moderato
  8. Symphony no. 5 in B flat major, D485 – 2. Andante con moto
  9. Symphony No. 8 in b minor, D759, “Unfinished” – 1. Allegro moderato
  10. Wanderer-Fantasie, D760 – 4. Allegro
