Power Lungs 5
Lieder Along
Imagine, a lone singer by the piano in the spotlight...
Intimate songs have been written in great quantities for a singer and a piano.
However, this is probably the least accessible music for the newcomer.
Like most other "chamber" music, lieder is often overlooked,
but add the unique combination of the "classical" voice,
foreign language lyrics and poetry, and you don't have a commercial winner.
Here are a few of the more famous and accessible songs, lieder (German songs)
and melodies (French songs).
The song titles usually give away the song content and that will suffice for many.
If you are a stickler for words, you’ll usually find from the translation in the CD booklet.
Suffice to say that most of the lyrics are ‘settings’ of famous poems of the day.
- Brahms Wiegenlied, op.49, no. 4 (Lullaby)
- Grieg Jeg Elsker Dig (Ich libe dich), op.5, no.3 (I love you)
- Hahn LÉnamourée (The Beloved)
- Ireland Sea Fever
- Poulenc La Courte Paille - La Reine de coeur (The Queen of Hearts)
- Schubert An die Musik, D 547 (To Music)
- Schubert An Sylvia, D891 (To Sylvia)
- Schubert Schwanengesang, D 957 - 4. Standchen (Serenade)
- Schubert Ave Maria (Ellens Gesang III), D 839
- Strauss, Richard Morgen! (Morning!), op.27, no.4
