Lieder Along

Imagine, a lone singer by the piano in the spotlight... Richmond Bridge, Richmond, TAS

Intimate songs have been written in great quantities for a singer and a piano. However, this is probably the least accessible music for the newcomer.

Like most other "chamber" music, lieder is often overlooked, but add the unique combination of the "classical" voice, foreign language lyrics and poetry, and you don't have a commercial winner.

Here are a few of the more famous and accessible songs, lieder (German songs) and melodies (French songs).

The song titles usually give away the song content and that will suffice for many. If you are a stickler for words, you’ll usually find from the translation in the CD booklet. Suffice to say that most of the lyrics are ‘settings’ of famous poems of the day.

  1. Brahms – Wiegenlied, op.49, no. 4 (Lullaby)
  2. Grieg – Jeg Elsker Dig (Ich libe dich), op.5, no.3 (I love you)
  3. Hahn – L’Énamourée (The Beloved)
  4. Ireland – Sea Fever
  5. Poulenc – La Courte Paille - La Reine de coeur (The Queen of Hearts)
  6. Schubert – An die Musik, D 547 (To Music)
  7. Schubert – An Sylvia, D891 (To Sylvia)
  8. Schubert – Schwanengesang, D 957 - 4. Standchen (Serenade)
  9. Schubert – Ave Maria (Ellen’s Gesang III), D 839
  10. Strauss, Richard – Morgen! (Morning!), op.27, no.4
