| As
well as the regular monthly meetings, members enjoy a few social functions
from time to time. A major function of the year is the Annual Dinner,
which is usually held in July or August at interesting locales.
There is no General Meeting in January or the months when Auctions are held (usually April and October).
Always ready to participate in useful inter-club activities – social, sporting and the promotion of the clubs or the hobby in general – the VCS encourages the promotion of friendliness and co-operation between like-minded societies. Supper is partaken of following each General Meeting – a time at which members have an opportunity to relax and talk among friends. In the past, the occasional live-food collecting days have been organised during the year, adding yet another enjoyable activity to the calendar. Fund-raising activities such as Mini-Auctions and Raffles are organised at each meeting to assist in covering the cost of prizes, trophies, publications, etc. Mini-Auctions are donation-based and are held monthly. Two Fish and Accessories Auctions are held each year and are very important contributors to club funds. These activities all aid in keeping the cost of our activities at a minimum. Fish house nights are organised from time to time, and are extremely popular events. See Coming Events. |

`The
Cichlid Monthly' is a medium for the exchange of information and
ideas, including society information. It is published and distributed
to all financial members monthly*. Visitors to the monthly meetings
receive a complimentary copy. Due to web space requirements, recent editions are no longer downloadable from this site, however, an e-mail list is available to interstate/overseas parties.
The final duty of the outgoing Editor each year is to select an outstanding article to do with fish or fishkeeping, printed in the just-completed volume of 'TCM' and award the 'Editor's Prize' (12 month's free membership of the Society) to the author. The prize is not a "best-article" award – it is strictly for original articles and is unashamedly novice-biased ie, a good article from a novice will probably trump a masterpiece by an "old hand". Due to the fact that this not a best-article award it need not be presented at all if, in the opinion of the Editor, no article meets the criteria. |

| This
valuable Society asset contains a comprehensive
range of books dealing with most subjects pertaining to cichlids,
aquatic plants and aquarium fish in general.
Most of these books are loaned at a nominal fee, on a monthly basis - naturally there is a small penalty for late returns. Exchange magazines from both Australian and overseas societies are also available. |

Trading
Table |
The Trading Table makes available a variety of aquarium products and magazines for purchase by the members and provides all members with a focal-point for trading between themselves, ie: members can put livestock/equipment on the Trading Table for sale (commission applies). |
| Two display tank competitions are held annually. One is conducted "live", whereby judges go about to members home to judge tanks in situ. The other show is conducted digitally. In this latter competition, members record video of their tanks and submit it for judging. | |
| The Elaine Turner Memorial Art & Photographic Competition is judged at the September general meeting. The art section accepts all forms of art, ie: painting, drawing, sculpting, knitting, cake decorating, chainsaw carving, computer graphics, weaving, ice-sculpture, etc. | |
A BAA certificate is presented to a breeder for spawning five species, then 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, etc. See BAA Rules. |
