Overall Fuel Hazard Guide

Measure fuel loadings around your house

One of the important factors in fire behaviour is the amount of fuel available for a bushfire. Higher fuel load will result in fires that are of higher intensity (they are hotter), higher rate of spread (the fire front travels faster along the ground), and have a greater flame height. Reducing fuel levels around your home decreases the fire risk.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment publishes a document called "Overall Fuel Hazard Guide". It can be used to measure/estimate the overall fuel loading using simple techniques.

Download it here. Enter "report 47", including the inverted commas, into the Keyword Search box. It is about 3Mb and will take a little time to download, even with a broadband connection.
