2005 Melbourne
Chess Club
Championship. Apologies to those
members who
have been waiting for
these bulletins
– there was a
misunderstanding
as to who would be
compiling the
text, games and photos.
It appears that
since I’ve compiled
them in the
past, the job is mine by
default.

The field is a small but competitive
group. IMs Guy West, Peter Froelich and
Mirko Rujevic have returned, as have other regulars such as Bob Krstic Malcolm
Pyke, Tom Kalisch, Felix Wyss, et al.
Notably in their absence however are regulars Ascaro Pecori and Richard
Voon – Ascaro seems to be taking an indefinite hiatus from chess (allegedly on
the urging
of his better half!), while Richard was unavailable for the last third of the
tournament to attend a reunion back in Malaysia. On top of these two, Marcus Raine, Elie Beranjia, David Beaumont,
Igor Bjelobrk and Eddy Levi just to name a few are also not participating. Hopefully, these and other members, former
and present, will return to tournament play at the MCC soon.

Zhigen Lin v John Beckman

Thankfully,
some new faces have come
to
participate. In particular, it is good
to
see one of
Australia’s most promising
juniors in
Zhigen Lin as a participant in
the Club
Championship. Zhigen, who is
also a
regular at both Box Hill and
Dandenong
Chess Clubs, must be one of
the hardest
working chess players going
around at
the moment. All praise to Zhigen’s mum
for being so
patient in
bringing her son along! Also notable is
the arrival of former top Australasian junior player, Kai Jensen. Kai (of course, no longer a young
whippersnapper) has just recently returned as an active chess player after
migrating here from New Zealand. Up to
now, Kai has been fitting chess into his busy schedule at Hobsons Bay Chess
Club. No doubt he can only benefit from
a change of scene and opposition that the MCC will provide. Finally, mention should be made of James
Nour, Alwyn Yap and Tino Fulgenzi, who has made a comeback. I personally do not know that much about
him, but I have been told that he was quite a player in the past. We hope Tino all the best in his return.

Anyway,
that’s enough by way of introduction.
The first round got underway on 31 January 2005, while the Oceania Zonal
was also underway – this was a bit disruptive to a number of players who had to
make up their first round game after their second round encounter. One of these adjourned
games saw
Mirko Rujevic teach Zhigen Lin a lesson in exploiting a material advantage into
a win in a bishop endgame. Meanwhile
Kai Jensen convincingly took advantage of Felix Wyss’ underdeveloped
position to
sacrifice an exchange for a decisive attack on Black’s king. Guy West got off to a good start by beating
John Beckman, but not after John seemed to get a good position. Unfortunately, he seemed to lose this with
23...Nd1+? rather than 23...cxd4!. Most
other results went as expected, the only real surprise being a draw in Ly v
Arkins, where yours truly misplayed a middlegame advantage to let Damien
escape.

|
In round 2,
Ly redeemed himself by having
a good win
over Tom Kalisch. Peter Froelich
won quickly
against Kelvin McBride after the
latter
failed to see he was losing a piece due
to White’s
threat of 21.Qg6 with mate. Bob
Krstic beat
Roger Beattie with a direct
attack
initiated with 20.h4. Rujevic
squeezed
Mark Roberts until the tactic
34.Nxe6!
opened up Black’s king for a decisive attack.
Thai Ly v Jim Papadinis

Round 3 saw fighting chess. Stephen Wertheim missed a win against a
rusty Fulgenzi. Peter Froelich beat Bob
Krstic after coming out of the complicated middlegame two pawns up. Kai Jensen finished off Barbaros Kara with a
scintillating series of sacrifices (21.Bxh7! Kxh7 22.Qh5+ Kg8 23.Rxg7!!). However, the big news was the upset of the
round
(maybe even
the tournament) with Malcolm Pyke’s convincing victory over Mirko Rujevic. Malcolm is always a dangerous opponent as
Mirko was to find out. The game was a
big setback to Mirko’s quest for the title.

Round 4 started off with an anti-climax.
Malcolm
Pyke, last round’s giant-killer was
losing a
piece and the game against Guy
West within
14 move. Meanwhile, Mirko
Rujevic
took his revenge on Thai Ly,
outplaying
Black in the Ruy Lopez. The
Ruy Lopez
also featured in Barbaros Kara’s
good win
over Zhigen Lin in the Dilworth
Attack of
the Open Variation. Barbaros has played
the White side of this line at least 4(!) times against Box Hill juniors since
October 2004. No wonder he pounded out
his moves. Barbaros had great
coordination with his minor pieces, but Zhigen was holding his position until
28...Rxe5?! 29.Rxe5 Rxc3?? 30. Ng5! with unavoidable mate. James Nour surprisingly held Felix Wyss to a
draw. The game of the round was
Froelich v Jensen, where Peter very ably exploited Kai’s shattered pawns in the
middegame to force an opposite colour bishops endgame where Peter was a pawn up
and Kai’s pawns were unfortunately on the wrong colour for his position to
hold.

Tino Fulgenzi v Stephen Wertheim
|
|
Round 5 saw the all-important game
of
West v Froelich, and the news was
all good for Guy as he relentlessly exploited Black’s weak b-pawn and passive
pieces to win. Although he still has
three rounds to go and he has only two games as black so far, Guy looks
unstoppable as he steamrolls the
opposition
in winning all his games to date. Other games saw Rujevic beat McBride, Kara
stumble against Krstic, despite looking to have good chances for much of the
game, while Malcolm Pyke recovered his good form by inflicting defeat on Kai
Jensen for a second consecutive week, this time with Black in the Benoni.

The good
news for Guy West continued in
Round
6. He beat Bob Krstic in 19 moves
after Bob
blundered a piece in the early
middlegame. Meanwhile, Froelich v Rujevic
was a
hard-fought draw, a result that would
have
satisfied neither. Round 6 also saw
some
interesting draws. Kai Jensen would
have been
dissatisfied with the draw in his
game
against Dejan Soco, as both players misplayed the ending – a theoretical
endgame of rook versus two connected passed pawns. Pyke v Wyss was a ding-dong battle, where Malcolm took the safe
option of allowing a perpetual check from Felix. McBride v Ly saw Black play creatively in the Open Catalan,
sacrificing an exchange with 19...Nxe4!? for just enough compensation. Kelvin then returned the exchange to give
Thai the advantage, which he proceeded to hand back with 29...b4?. However, it was soon Kelvin’s to suffer
after simultaneously offering a draw and playing 43.Nc4?. In the end, a draw was the fair result as
neither player deserved to win.
