MELBOURNE CHESS CLUB HISTORY

The Melbourne Chess Club is one of the very oldest chess clubs in the world (that has been continuously running) and was founded circe 1866.

When I took up chess in 1969, the club shared 483 Elizabeth St with the Victorian Chess Association.

In 1981 the club purchased a two storey terrace-house at 110 Peel St, North Melbourne, being the only club in Australia to own its premises.

Thanks the generous bequest of the late Arnold Rudzitis, the club bought a larger building which it is located at the time of writing.

The clubrooms walls contain numerous memorable and historical photos including pictures of well known chessplayers as Capablanca et al.

Chess historian Tony Wright has collected numerous games from the early days of the MCC.

Age Painting

Past president Robert Brooking has written a short book "Care for a Game?" about the story of the club.
