What will I be learning?

The Certificate I level (ICA10101) teaches students how to use a personal computer and successfully operate the software most commonly used in business and/or in the home.  A valued qualification in the workplace.

How is the course structured?

The full course consists of 6 units.  To gain the full qualification students need to successfully complete all 6 units.

The units cover the fundamentals of personal computer use: including Windows and file management; the use of internet and email; the MS Office package in word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), database (Access) and presentation packages (Powerpoint);

How long will it take to complete?

Daytime classes:
both Tuesday & Thursday, all day, for 12 weeks (starting Term 1 or Term 3) – during normal school hours

Evening classes: 
One night each week (Thursdays) for a full year – starting with 3 introductory units during semester 1

Are there any tests?

All nationally accredited courses require student assessment.  Students will be assessed throughout the course by a variety of means:  the completion of set work; small projects; questionnaires; assignments etc. 

Is there any homework?

Yes.  Students will be required to complete a certain amount of homework and revision away from class.  The time involved is often equivalent to the time spent in class.

Do I need my own computer?

Students need access to a computer out-of-class time, for their revision and practice.  We have a limited number of places for computer access.  Please speak to your tutor to arrange a time to use our computers.  Computers are also available at local libraries for community use. 

How much will it cost me?

The cost for the full course is $332.50 ($170 concession).  These fees include a general service fee of $10 per unit and a fee of $10 per unit for student requirements.  Plus an additional cost of $60 (inc. GST) for a student manual.

What if I am a Health Care Card holder?

Students with a Health Care card in the family are required to provide a copy of the card to qualify for the concession rate.  Cost for those on a concession is $170 plus $60 for student manual (including GST)

Is there anything else to pay?

Yes.  Annual House membership of $7 applies. 

The invoicing of any course payments will attract an administrative fee of $5.50 (including GST)

Can I pay it off?

Yes.  You may pay by installments if needed – on the understanding that you are committed to continue once you have been allocated a place.  Please speak to the programming staff to arrange payments and to sign your payment agreement.

Who will be teaching?

Longbeach PLACE is working in partnership with Chisholm Institute to deliver the course.  Chelsea employs qualified tutors, who are experienced in working with adult learners to conduct the teaching. 

Where does this course lead me?

On successful completion of the course, students will have skills and knowledge to enable them to operate a personal computer in the workplace or for home business use.  Further units can be undertaken to gain higher qualifications.  Students have option of going onto a higher Certificate or Diploma level.

What qualification will I receive?

This is a nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) course.  Longbeach PLACE is registered  as a provider of accredited training by the Victorian Qualifications Authority.  A certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course.  Statements and certificates are issued by Chisholm Institute.

How do I get my results?

When all records have been completed, students will be notified by mail of their results.  If the full course has not been completed, a statement of attainment may be requested for individual units.  Chisholm Student Administration Services can be contacted on 9238 8222.

What is self paced learning?

Units in Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Database are available for students to work at their own pace, with tutor support.  Individual students in the same class will be working on different modules each using a student manual.  Please book early as places are limited.  Assessments available upon request.

What happened to Certificate II?

All Information Technology courses have been updated at a national level and are now part of the Information Technology Training Package (ICA99).  The Certificate I in Information Technology (ICA10101) replaces Certificate II in Information Technology – Computer Applications (2209ABC).

Can I do just part of the course?

The first 3 units will be run twice during semester 1. 
Thursday evenings , 19 weeks starting in Term 1
and Fridays for 12 weeks starting in Term 2.  
Cost: $166 ($110 concession) student manual not required.

The 3 remaining units are available Wednesday evenings, 19 weeks starting in Term 1 and Thursday evenings starting in Term 3.  Cost $166 ($110 concession) plus the cost of student manual ($60 inc. GST)

How do I get into the course?

Please book early as class sizes are limited.  All participants are required to fill in and sign a registration form.  Bookings are made directly to Longbeach PLACE by phoning 9776 1386.  If we are unable to immediately take your phone call. Please leave a message for a return call so that we can arrange your booking.  If you require more information regarding course suitability please ask for an appointment with programming staff.  A $50 deposit will be accepted to hold a place in class.  To retain the place full fees are due 14 days prior to commencement.  Bookings can be made by phone using credit card; mail using cheque or credit card; or in person during office hours (please phone first to check correct address and opening times for bookings.)
