June/July 2008----------------------------------------------Issue # 7

President’s Report:
Every Australian should go to the U.K. once in their life, nothing will make you sit up and appreciate what we have right here in Australia more.
One tiny village we passed through which was the size of Barwon Heads had 3 speed cameras and 2 spy cameras in the main street. They were not for national security but to raise revenue, if you stop and park for 1 minute to go into a shop to buy a paper for instance some little government twerp save the shot and sends you a ticket in the mail.
Still it was not all bad, I got to see the greatest rail museum in the world at Swindon, saw a Spitfire put on an aerobatic display that had to be seen to be believed and stayed in a pub that was trading 50 years before Australia was discovered. The cellars under the pub were built in 1153 which is pretty old.
Well chapter 700 is coming up to its first birthday and we will be renewing our memberships in a few weeks. I think it is important that we put on some events that will guarantee we keep our Free Flight members and gain some Control Line guys. Our 1st year is a success and I really want our 2nd one to be even better, If you have any suggestions please contact a committee member or attend our next committee meeting, details of which you will find else where in the newsletter.
I hope to see you at a contest soon somewhere and wish you all the best for the coming season.
Fred.

Editor/Webmaster Report:
The tiny gliders postal contest is a postal competition that has held every year by Mr. Sullivan. This year he is very busy and was upset there were not many entries last year so, me and some friends are holding this event.
Basically there are four categories:
6" HLG
6" CLG
8" HLG
8" CLG
There are no limitations on the airframe, except for the wing span.
The models must be thrown from the ground, jumping is allowed, and must land on the same plan it was launch.
Flight times are limited for 60s for HLGs and 90s for CLGs.
Five consecutive flights must be made, the longest and the shortest are discarded and the other 3 are summed (1s precision on each).
As always the contest is held on honor basis, we think as most of FF people, there is no sense on being dishonest on a postal, or any, contest so the times are assumed to be true.
I will put online the results on a web site and try to keep them update so pictures of the models, their plans, and comments are very well come.
Please feel free for sending the times and suggestions,
Alexandre Cruz. Email < alexandrefcruz@gmail.com>
P.S. If it helps: I fly mostly 6" HLG, I calculate the best wing chord is 55mm and weight between 2.3 and 2.8g. The reference for the CLG is the "egg" which flies very well and can be found easily on the web.
Please forward any news, contest details, photos etc to
< chapter700@gmail.com> for possible publication in our Newsletter/ Website

May/June 2008----------------------------------------------Issue # 6

President’s Report: Fred has not yet returned from England but I understand he has had a great visit
REPORT: MURRAY KNOTT ESTATE.

From sales of Murray’s Modelling Items we have raised $ 6613 for donation to Melanoma Cancer Research Program. Joan Knott and Family and Chapter 700 would like to thank all those people who made purchases for the cause.
THANK YOU.
Murray had written about his “Life with Aeromodelling” in anticipation of sending it to a magazine. I’m sure it is similar to many of us and maybe from its reading it will generate some fond memories.
Alan Matthieson-Harrison
Sec. Chapter 700
The Model Aeroplane Enthusiast – by Murray Knott.

“My interest in aviation was kindled by my older brother, Ralph, who built a model aeroplane from an Australian kit, about 1947. I think the kit was made in Sydney and sold at a local newsagent in my hometown, Broken Hill, in the far west of NSW. The model was a rubber powered Monocoupe (scale). It did not fly well, probably the quality of the kit and the ability of the constructor were not adequate. I followed my brother’s efforts with scale rubber powered model kits some from Central Aircraft in Melbourne but bought from a sports store in Broken Hill. None of these models flew well but gave to me valuable building experience. The newsagents, in Broken Hill, sold model aeroplane magazines which I bought. Despite not having seen a model aeroplane fly well, nor an engine powered model, the contents of the Aeromodeler & Aircraft magazines gave impetus to my aspirations to build a proper flying model.

Xmas holidays our family spent in Adelaide. We spent our time at the beach, visited the city by trolley bus, and went shopping. At the age of eleven years, I bought an ED Bee diesel engine, a Frog Stardust rubber driven FF duration model and a Frog Janus power model at Johnny Martin’s Department Store, toy and model section. I could not wait to travel home to Broken Hill that year.

The Stardust was built despite the difficulty I had with the Obechi strip in the kit (used instead of balsa). The Stardust had a short life, ending when it glided into a stone wall. The fuselage was irreparable but the wings and tailplane were okay. I tried to build the Janus but the task was too great for me. Late 1950, I bought an Aeromodeler magazine which contained the scaled down plan and construction article for Vic Smeed’s Tomboy. I had done a year of Technical Drawing at school so I managed to draft the plan of a Tomboy fuselage and that summer, I built the fuselage with the Bee poorly mounted in the front end. The Stardust wings were about the same span as the smaller version of the Tomboy so I attached the Stardust flying surfaces to the Tomboy fuselage. The obstacle ahead of me was to start the ED Bee despite the Frog 8 x 6 plastic propeller. The fuel I had bought with the engine was stale and I had little idea of how to flick the prop. I had not seen an engine started. Another budding young Aeromodeler at school, who was being helped by a radio technician who lived about 5 klms from our home, helped .The Technician instructed me in the improvements necessary for the engine mounting, gave me some new fuel and showed me how to start the Bee. I must have nearly worn the Bee out practicing engine starting before I was ready to fly the Tomboy.

My friend and I with the Tomboy were driven across town for the test flight of the model. With fresh fuel, a couple of low powered taxi hops were accomplished and with the Bee running flat out, the Tomboy ROG’d in magnificent style – I remain to this day hooked on aeromodelling. The fuel tank must have been full; Tomboy climbed in left hand circles and reached a considerable altitude before the engine cut. The flying field was an old cycle track (velodrome) located on the fringe of Town. There was little wind, no cloud and the Tomboy glided towards Town over the houses and descended into a veranda post in the front of a miner’s cottage. The fuselage was shattered but the wings and tail plane lived on. The Bee was unmarked.

To replace the Tomboy fuselage, a profile fuselage of balsa and spruce was easily made. The profile fuselage with the Stardust flying surfaces and the Bee flew on through 1951. The profile fuselage idea came from the August 1951 Australian Model Hobbies, Hyphen 500 plan and a Broken Hill Police Boys Club member had built a Hyphen 500 with a Burford GB250 diesel engine. These young life experiences left me hooked on Aeromodelling for the rest of my life.

I now live at Aireys Inlet in Victoria so free flight fields are not easily reached from home. I have resorted to Radio Control and fly a Tomboy and Hyphen 500 from a paddock alongside Painkalac Creek. Tomboy has an old Taipan 1.5 diesel which runs at about half revs and the Hyphen has a Sabre 250 replica diesel. I have joined the GMAC club and hope to fly at the field near Geelong.
I have other Free Flight models powered by spark ignition engines. These are being converted to radio and the first will be flown this year.”…………….

Murray later moved to Queenscliff, joined Chapter 700 and loved to fly his many “Simplex” models until his passing away early this year.
