The Glenrowan Fire
Brigade is situated 230 km north east of Melbourne (Victoria , Australia) .
The township is located utop a divide in the Warby Ranges and is
divided by the Melbourne to Sydney rail link . The Hume freeway passes along the edge of
the townships southern boundary . It is a wholly volunteer brigade , consisting of 35
members and is part of the Wangaratta Fire Brigades Group , in Region
23 . Being located half way between two Urban locations we are often called upon to
assist with fires and incidents within those brigade areas , as well as other Rural areas
within the region . The tanker is also on standby to make up part of a Region strike force
, which can be dispatched to any part of Victoria or any other States as required , to
assist with major fires . Our Fire tanker is a Hino Diesel , with a 3,000 litre water tank
, powered by a Duetz two-stage diesel pump , capable of pumping 1,400 litres per minute .
The truck is further equipped with a portable Quick Fill Pump - for pumping from dams or
creeks, Foam making equipment - for flammable liquid fires and Breathing apparatus - for
structure fires or hazardous materials incidents (Hazmat) . It also carries many lengths
of 38mm & 64mm diameter hose , with a variety of attack nozzles . At times 200-300
metres of hose will be used to reach fires in rugged or hilly terrain . With this
versatile truck , the brigade can attend fires in rugged off-road conditions to highway
work , which makes it very suitable as the greater part of our area consists of hilly
terrain . The brigade averages approximately 50 turn-outs per year , with the majority
being grass / shrub fires . The brigade often attends fires in other areas , with the
furthest being Sydney , Coleambally (NSW) and the Dandenong fires near Melbourne . The
Brigade is one of 1,226 brigades which make up Victoria's fire fighting service , known as
the "Country Fire Authority" .
The CFA has over 74,000 volunteer members supported
by approximately 890 full time staff . |
