In the lead-up to Federation a sense of national sentiment was building amongst Australians. There seemed to be an increasing feeling that the separate Australian colonies and their people had so much in common that they were destined to unite as a single nation. 'Brotherly' affection, the desire to unite to make the country great, and devotion to Australia were all aspects of the growing nationalism.
