VIEW FROM NEW SOUTH WALES

The Commonwealth Bill
. . . . . .

As electors will soon be called upon to vote upon the above measure we present in concrete form the main reasons pro and con -

WHY IT SHOULD BE ACCEPTED.

  • Because of European complications and the fear of war.
  • Because of an undoubted concert between the Great Powers against British influence, evidenced by increased German activity in Australasian waters.
  • Because of Russia's openly aggressive attitude, shown by her taking possession of Port Arthur [China], within easy striking distance of Australia.
  • Because our defences must be federalised.
  • Because Parkes would have voted for it.
  • Because neither Anti-alien Immigration nor State pensions for aged could be effectually dealt with except under federal control.
  • Because it is the work of the brainiest men in Australia.
  • Because Barton wants it taken upon trust.
  • Because it's a great improvement on the bill of 1891.
  • Because Sydney should not be greedy.

WHY IT SHOULD BE REJECTED.

  • Because the war scare is all my eye and Betty Martin.
  • Because Britons never will be slaves.
  • Because the Convention has proved that under equal State representation in the Senate the small States will make a dead set against the big.
  • Because N.S.W. fears the power of the small States in the Senate.
  • Because N.S.W. is asked to carry the poor States on her back.
  • Because the Referendum has not been adopted.
  • Because one man one vote has been sacrificed.
  • Because Parkes would not have voted for it.
  • Because in it too much power over our railways and our rivers is to be vested in the Inter-State Commission.
  • Because that Commission will practically be appointed by the smaller States.
  • Because it is a lawyer-made Constitution.
  • Because Reid has cut a double-shuffle over it.
  • Because the next bill will be a great improvement on this.
  • Because the seat of Government has not been fixed in N.S.W.
