FOR AND AGAINST: Different Agendas
Document 4
The vote of 1898 failed to secure a majority. This must have
been uppermost in the minds of members of the Australasian Federation
League of Victoria.
FEDERALISTS!
Beware of Apathy!
And Remember:
- This is your last opportunity to record your vote in favour of
a United Australia.
- Last time in Victoria 100,000 votes were polled for Federation,
and 22,000 against it. Is the majority to be increased this time by
your patriotism or decreased by your apathy?
In New South Wales a poll of 190,000 was recorded. Cannot patriotic
Victorians show an equal interest in Australia's future?
- You have no excuse for not recording your vote, as the Government
has arranged that each person who has taken out an Elector's Right
since 1st December last year can vote at any Polling Booth in the
Colony on presentation of his Right. If not on the Roll, take out
an Elector's Right at once.
- Any ratepaying Elector may either vote at his own Booth or any
other outside the limit of three miles from his own Booth. In the
latter case he must have a voter's certificate, which he can obtain
on application to the local Electoral Registrar.
- No plea of ignorance will excuse you, as the Government will furnish
every Elector with a copy of the Commonwealth Bill and Amendments.
- Record your vote in favour of Federation early on 27th July, 1899,
and thus assist in the building of a nation.
For UNITY, Vote thus:-
