The Bell

There is a single bell in the Christ Church campanile. Specially ordered and cast for Christ Church, it weighs over 6 cwt.

In the ringer’s room, the following notice appears.

Notice!

This bell was presented to the parish by John Grice Esq., of Bootle, Cumberland, England, accompanied with the following requirement, to be exposed in the ringer’s room:

Campanile

1st

That all who hear its call to worship may attend the summons if they can.

2nd

That every Saturday night at sunset the bell be tolled, to remind the parish that the week of labour is gone and rest-day cometh.

3rd

That the departing year be tolled out at midnight of December 31st, to tell that one year less remains to all.
On the bell is found the manufacturer’s name and the date of casting:
