Neda Starac

…a loving reflection of people, animals and life…

Originally trained in nursing in Rijeka, Croatia, Neda Starac began her formal Art studies in Fremantle WA in 1977. Since 1994 she has held many solo exhibitions in WA, and two in Melbourne. She has attracted ten awards for her work between 1997 and 2004.

Neda Starac has selected eight pieces for the CAS Display Case; quite small items, quite different; all unfailingly designed in respect to composition, colour scheme and balance.

The paintings, while diverse and thereby captivating, belong together. They can be seen as the work of one artist, not several. One can feel the exploratory mind-set of the artist here. Not at all out of her control, not careless or random; rather the fun approach: 'What'll I do this time?' To be able to offer this to her audience and still retain a sense of congruence between the works is quite an accomplishment. 'At The Lake', the odd man out in this selection, is a very attractive piece with an Impressionistic touch to it. The artist has shown a refreshing respect for the framing, the presentation, of her work. How often do we see a picture frame that murders a good painting?

Neda Starac's frames make perfect settings for her works. It's no accident. Each has been made or changed to suit. Notably the frames on 'At The Lake', 'Indian Madonna', 'Green Horse', 'Observed'.

Neda Starac has brought her ethnic roots with her, seasoned them with her formal training and even reflected her early work in caring for people by producing work with a loving assessment of people, animals and life.

Colourful, joyful, skilful. Loved 'em!
