Annual Exhibition 2004 - Mini-review
The Contemporary Art Society of Victoria's Annual Exhibition of works by its members opened last Tuesday evening to an enthusiastic crowd of members, art-lovers and friends at Eckersley's Open Space Gallery (97 Franklin Street, Melbourne).
Well-known Melbourne-based printmaker, Geoffrey Ricardo judged the show and awarded four major prizes along with a number of special commendations from a field of over 80 contemporary artworks on display. The judge described the winning painting, 'Ancestors' by local artist Joy Elizabeth Lea, as having '... a great natural movement, intensity and mood', and being 'evocative as an image.'
Joy, a Melbourne-based artist living in Surrey Hills, is both a painter in oils and a printmaker and is currently completing a Diploma of Visual Art at Box Hill Institute. About her winning picture she says: 'This year I have explored a theme concerning isolation and loneliness amidst the crowded solitude in which I live.' With an academic background in Psychology and English Literature, Joy's painting is very much concerned with the human predicament of 'alienation in the crowd'.
Other prizewinners (with judge's comments):
2nd Prize: No. 2 "David Block" by Carolyn Allshorn. - A beautiful, strong, bold and dynamic drawing.
3rd Prize: No. 30 "Roadway" by Colleen Guiney - Intriguing as an image / space, relaxed naturalness with paint and drawing, giving the work energy and spontaneity.
Special Prize for most innovative use of materials: No. 62"A Patch of Blue" by Theo Petrie - This painting pushes what paint does normally and is expected to do as a fine art medium; it is a bold and, brave use of paint.
Highly Commended:
