"Artist since 1949"
Born into Apartheid's Johannesburg in 1949, Audrey Rhoda immigrated ' en famile' to Australia in 1983. Settled in Sydney, she later undertook a Fine Arts Degree followed by a Masters of Art.
From the outset of her career in art she has defined her painting as a narrative of her own growth and her art as a visual autobiography.
Her unique way of working involves the layering of beeswax and oils, which she considers a "metaphor for life- a complex accumulation of experiences".
Rhoda considers the process of her painting equally important to her results- philosophically, "another metaphor for the many unknowns in life's journey".
A strong theme in her paintings is "dogness" a term she coined to represent the ideal qualities of "friendship and relationships". "In our dialogues with our dogs we can find a profound depth and honesty - it engenders an unconditional trust, giving incredible perspective to the human version of friendship".
Rhoda lives and works on her own in her studio - a recent redefinition of her "home space" after her two children moved out, affording her the freedom to use the "room of her own" as an inspiration for her creativity.
Rhoda has exhibited extensively in Sydney as well as in Melbourne , New York, Paris and Los Angeles,. She is currently represented by Charles Hewitt Gallery (Sydney), Gallery 101 (Melbourne) and Figureworks, (New York).
