BILL NOLAN-LEWIS

Born in Heidelberg, Melbourne, Bill lived at Montmorency, with his parents, Bill and Helen Lewis, younger brother Russell, and grand parents Bill and Emily Nolan.

Coming to visit his grand parents was big first cousin Sidney Nolan who showed Bill his paintings from around the Eltham area. Young Bill was in awe of Sidney's work and vowed to be an artist like him

When Sidney called back again some time later Bill was drawing cartoons, and Sidney admired them; he said that 'Things were tough in the fine art world at that time' and , said cartooning would be more attractive for a career.

Bill followed his advice and was drawing caricatures of his school mates, and in a short time was asked to draw caricatures of footballers, cricketers and councillors for the local newspapers.

After Bill left school in 1950 he became engrossed in black and white and water colours. He commenced a cartoon Business, which covered a wide variety of advertising work. He retired in 1999 and decided to paint, and joined CAS Vic, as did Sidney in 1938.

Since then Bill has taken part in nine CAS shows, contributing 25 works. He has won 1st prize in the CAS 2000 annual exhibition, and 2 highly commendations in the CAS annual exhibition of 2004.
