MARGARET C MILES

Born: 26 March 1938

British/Australian citizen. Migrated 1968

Education

I migrated from Sussex, England, in 1968, with my husband & two daughters. We sailed to Melbourne Australia on the ship" Fair Star'.

Like all migrants of that period, we worked at various factory jobs to set ourselves up, with a house & home.

My interest in art was always there, from a childhood in the 2nd world war, drawing & colouring were offered as an easy mental escape from many long hours spent in air raid shelters.

In Australia & after work hours, I began to study art in a serious way with different private tutors. This benefited me greatly & I joined Glenroy Art Group, also Sunbury Art Society & later Buttlejorrk Artists Inc.

I exhibited my work regularly with each group & was encouraged by artist friends to take art up to a professional level. I decided to go back to school in 1988, I applied for entry into Preston College of Art to do TOP/VCE Art & Design, after that I was accepted into Phi!lip Institute of Tech: completing a B.A in Fine Art, painting & sculpture

Since the development of my work, I have exhibited in many shows both nationally & internationally, I have a great interest in the surface of work & often create a tactile or textural surface .I consider myself to be a builder, as in sculpture or 2D work.

I extract my ideas from every day news stories & current affairs. I use various figurative motifs as metaphor to tell or to interpret the story or convey the idea. I have the ability to draw & love to draw, this is the way I always begin my work.

I have been able to use my gifts to teach art techniques. My first experience was in H.M Prison Pentridge, since then in other community based learning centres for adults & children. I enjoyed working for 3 years as artist in residence with Sunbury Primary School, where we made a wonderful sculptured mosaic garden, & a time machine rocket sculpture. Other most satisfying achievements were getting work accepted into the Rutherford Institute, Washington, U.S.A & into two minor exhibitions at the N.G.V with 'Faith Works" & later "Seize". Also the Contemporary Art Soc. Travelling Art Exhibition.

I enjoy exhibiting & working with other artists, keeping up with current art theories & practice.
