Eucalyptus obliqua - Messmate, Stringybark

   *
Native to Victoria Qld NSW Tas and SA.  A tall upright tree (4 - 70m) important for its hardwood timber properties.  Leaves are shiny dark green, lanceolate, markedly asymmteric (oblique), 8-15 x 2.4 cm.  Bark is always fibrous, stringy and fissured.  Clusters of white to cream flowers in summer followed by wine glass shaped capsules.  Propagation is by seed.
The bark was used by the Aborigines as roofing and for canoes as it is able to be peeled off in large slabs.
