Somalia

Somalia is in the eastern part of Africa - the "Horn of Africa". It became an independent republic in 1960. It has twice the area of Italy. Its north coast faces the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Peninsula, and its east coast faces the Indian Ocean. The capital city is Mogadishu. The population is probably less than half that of Australia.

Most of Somalia lies just north of the equator, so it is a hot tropical land., though it can be quite cold in the mountainous regions of the country. Most of the country is a flat, low plateau.

Cattle, camels, sheep and goats are raised in Somalia. There are also many wild animals, such as lions, elephants, leopards, hippopotamuses, giraffes and zebras.
