Rosie’s Report on
Melanie Cole’s Visit
Melanie Cole visited our class on the 26th of May 1999. Melanie came in just before lunch time and then Melanie come back and we asked her all about the Yukon. We also asked her about her students and how they get to go to class when it snows.
Melanie’s students do not go to class when it snows becuse they have 8 months of snow
in the year. So the students go to school for only 4 months of the year.
Melanie also told us how to make a snow house by using the best snow in the Yukon. She told us how they build a snow house by making blocks 12x12. She also told us that she made one and lived in a snow house to keep warm. It is a good way to keep warm in the snow.

The snow ends in May and it could go until September. They also get two months of darkness and her students still go to school just as we do if it rains and we also get school holidays four time a year. So in away we are just like the students from the Yukon.
Her students also travel to go to class every week. Some of Melanie’s students travel from Dawson city and some also come from White Horse and all over the Yukon.

We asked Melanie all about the  Yukon, things like do you have Mounties police? And Melanie said yes we do have Mounties police but they do not go in the traditional red police uniform. They celebrated their one hundred year anniversary last year.
Melanie’s home town is Whitehorse in the Yukon, Canada. She is here for one year on a working holiday. Then she will go back to the Yukon and tell all about Aussie students and how nice Australia is so that we get more visitors from the Yukon.
The Yukon resources come from gold mining
and tourism. The Yukon population is small,
32,000 and the main language in the Yukon is English. The students go to computer class
for 4 months a year and there are 9 students in her class  and they do reading and writing
 and some send us email.
