ISSUE 2 MAGAZINE OF CARLTON READING & WRITING STUDENTS JULY 1999

Wednesday 28th April  1999
Julie, from Yarra Melbourne Regional Library came to the Carlton Adult Reading and Writing class to find out opinions about the Library services and systems. She told us that they are making the Carlton Library building bigger.
We suggested that they make more room to read and study. We found the Web site, but it didn’t have much information or the catalogue as well.
Julie was interested in our suggestion for the mobile Library service to have the Internet, computer catalogue and books. We inquired whether there will be more parking areas? Julie said she would look into it.
She was pleased with what we had to say about the Library and we would like her to come back and tell us her outcome of her research.

KEVIN’S CHILDHOOD MEMORIES
When I was a child we played games such as hide and seek, soap box derby, hopscotch and ball games.
During the Summer we did yabby-catching – fishing with a bit of meat tied on a piece of string - in the Merri Creek.
During the week we listened to the children’s radio hour, in the morning and the afternoon.
On Saturday we played ‘matinee picture’ games on a vacant block of land.

I have lived in North Carlton all my life.
In the 1970’s this Carlton House was home to a group of 18 hippies. They were very down to earth. They all had long hair and colourful clothes. They were peaceful and loving people and were vegetarian.
One day they invited me and my friend to their house we became good friends with the hippies.
They loved having a smoke of marijuana and were in to painting the wall outside the Carlton House.
Some of the hippies love art and some were into hippy music and playing instruments. Most of the painting  on the stone wall at the side were very colorful. A lot of people love looking at the art painting on wall.
In 1973 the hippies had a dog called Jackson
We had a lot of fun with Jackson. The hippies loved the dog but one day it got killed by a car. We buried at the side of the house next to a tree.
Some of the people did not like the hippies that lived in the street.
