Beginning PowerPoint ’97 Step by Step
  1. Open PowerPoint
  2. Click on ‘blank presentation’ then OK
  3. Click on OK again. This makes your first slide.
  4. Click on ‘Click to add title’ and type your presentation title.
  5. Click on ‘Click to add subtitle’ and type your subtitle.
  6. INSERT menu -> NEW SLIDE
  7. Click OK. This puts in your second slide.
  8. Click on ‘Click to add title’ and type your title.
  9. Click on ‘Click to add text’ and type some text.
  10. Repeat steps 6 – 9 if you want more pages.
  11. SLIDE SHOW menu -> VIEW SHOW. This will show you your slides in full screen view. Click to advance to next slide. Click again to go back to the slide view.
  12. Insert a new slide using one of the layouts with a picture in it.
  13. Double click on the picture icon to insert a picture from the MS Office collection.
  14. Alternatively, click in a box on the slide, then go to the INSERT menu -> PICTURE -> FROM FILE
  15. You can choose colours for your slides in a few different ways. From the FORMAT menu choose:
           
    w Slide color scheme – set colours or custom schemes 
           
    w Background – choose individual colours or textures for backgrounds 
           
    w Apply design – background graphics, a full template
  16. From the SLIDE SHOW menu -> SLIDE TRANSITION to create animation effects between slides. Set different transitions for each slide or apply one scheme to the whole presentation by clicking on the APPLY TO ALL button.
  17. Keep viewing the show as a slide show to test the look of transitions and develop a consistent flow.
  18. Use the INSERT, FORMAT and SLIDE SHOW menus to add new images, sounds, transitions and effects to your presentation. Use other formatting features as in word processing to change font, size, text colour, alignment, bullet styes etc.
  19. Save regularly to avoid losing your good hard work.
  20. Use TOOLS -> POWERPOINT CENTRAL to update your clipart and get other features from Microsoft’s website. You can find online tutorials and help with design issues from there too.
